Dental plaster is a gypsum-based dental material made primarily of calcium sulfate hemihydrate, manufactured by heating gypsum. When combined with water, it forms a workable paste that progressively solidifies into a hard solid mass via a chemical reaction called as crystallization. Because of its ease of manipulation and inexpensive cost, it is often used in dentistry to create preliminary study models, diagnostic casts, and models for mounting in articulators. Dental plaster has a lower strength and more porosity than dental stone, but it enables acceptable detail reproduction for basic clinical and instructional reasons.
